AHEPA Management Company Awarded $90,000 Research: Art Works Grant through the National Endowment for the Arts

Released June 29, 2017

FISHERS, IN — The National Endowment for the Arts has announced its second major funding for fiscal year 2017. Included in this announcement is a Research: Art Works award of $90,000 to AHEPA Management Company to support a study examining the effects of music engagement on low-income, older adults.

“The arts reflect the vision, energy, and talent of America’s artists and arts organizations,” said NEA Chairman Jane Chu. “Research that illuminates the value and impact of the arts, like the work from AHEPA Management Company, is essential to better tell the story of how the arts influence our lives.”

Art Poly, President and CEO of AHEPA Management Company, said, “We are humbled and pleased to receive this award and excited at being able to participate in this study which we fully expect will be of significant benefit to older adults.”

The study is made available through a collaborative approach involving LinChiat Chang, Ph.D as Principal Investigator; Helen Kivnick, Ph.D., University of Minnesota; Judith-Kate Friedman, Founder of Songwriting Works and Linda Duncan, Gerontologist, Project Director, AHEPA Management Company. In partnership with Songwriting Works Educational Foundation, professional musicians will implement a three-month songwriting program for older adults who reside in 20 affordable senior housing communities located in 4 states that serve approximately 1,000 older adults. The project combines the principles of Vital Involvement (Helen Kivnick), Creativity as health promotion (Linda Duncan), and Songwriting Work’s Eight Principles of Creative Engagement.
